Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Lhasa

Fly into Lhasa (3,650m). Your guide meets you at the airport. Rest at the hotel to acclimatize — no strenuous activity on day one.

Day 2

Potala Palace and Jokhang

Morning visit to the Potala Palace, winter palace of the Dalai Lamas. Afternoon at Jokhang Temple, Tibet's holiest shrine, then walk the Barkhor pilgrim circuit.

Day 3

Drepung and Sera

Drepung Monastery, once the world's largest. Afternoon at Sera Monastery for the famous monk debates (except Sundays).

Day 4

Yamdrok Lake to Shigatse

Drive over Gangbala Pass to Yamdrok, one of Tibet's three holy lakes. Continue past Karola Glacier to Shigatse (3,900m).

Day 5

Tashilhunpo to Tingri

Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lama. Drive to Tingri (4,300m), gateway to Everest.

Day 6

Everest Base Camp

Drive to Rongbuk Monastery and on to Everest Base Camp (5,200m). Sunset turns Everest gold — the most unforgettable evening of the trip.

Day 7

Everest sunrise, return

Wake for sunrise over the north face of Everest. Drive back to Shigatse.

Day 8

Return to Lhasa, depart

Drive back to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo river. Transfer to airport or railway station.
